Spoken Cree, Level II

ê-ililîmonâniwahk

This revised edition of Spoken Cree by C. Douglas Ellis is the second of three levels in a complete Cree language course, based on the "N" and "L" dialects spoken west of James Bay. Level II teaches Cree language by focussing on typical day-to-day situations. Each of the 17 units include basic conversation, a discussion of Cree grammar, drills, conversation practice, a vocabulary list, and a review section. The complete collection of sound files to accompany this manual can be downloaded from http://spokencree.org/. Spoken Cree III is available from the School of Linguistics and Language Studies, Carleton University.

Reviews

"Ellis. presents a revised edition for the intermediate volume of his three-level Cree language course, originally released in 1963. Building on the fundamentals covered in Spoken Cree, Level I, the text explores the language in the cultural context of a typical northern Cree village. Coverage includes more complex grammatical concepts, including modes, tenses and submodes of the conjunct order; more advanced processes of composition and derivation; and the various forms of the preterit, both independent and conjunct. Extensive use of the syllabary is introduced, with exercises in syllabic writing. The second-level text no longer contains the full glossary; a glossary for all three levels will be appended to Spoken Cree, Level III." Reference & Research Book News, August 2005

"Both Spoken Cree, Level II and its predecessor are an ideal resource for classroom and distance education in Cree for linguistic, anthropology, and Aboriginal studies departments." John Stecklay, Canadian Book Review Annual, 2004
