Mind, Mood, and Memory

The Neurobehavioral Consequences of Multiple Sclerosis

A unique resource for all health care practitioners caring for people with multiple sclerosis.

Endorsed by The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers

Multiple sclerosis (MS), a progressive neurologic disease, is characterized by a host of physical symptoms. But the neurobehavioral consequences of MS can be as devastating and debilitating as physical symptoms, and they are often unreported and undertreated. In this new book, Dr. Anthony Feinstein, a neuropsychiatrist, documents the effects of MS on cognition, information processing speed, learning and memory, executive function, personality, mood, and behavior.

Feinstein touches on a number of topics, including

• the common cognitive challenges that occur with MS, such as slowed information processing speed, impaired memory, and executive function deficits
• psychiatric disorders that accompany MS, such as depression and psychosis
• current neuropsychological, brain MRI, and treatment data applicable to the psychiatric and cognitive disorders

Mind, Mood, and Memory in Multiple Sclerosis is enhanced both by the latest science and by eloquent case histories that illustrate each cognitive and emotional disorder. Feinstein also provides recommendations for evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Written in an immediate, accessible way, this book has a crossover appeal, making it of interest not only to neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and nurses but also to people with MS and their caregivers, family, and friends.

About the Authors

Anthony Feinstein is a professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of Toronto. He is the author of The Clinical Neuropsychiatry of Multiple Sclerosis and Journalists under Fire: The Psychological Hazards of Covering War.

Endorsements

"Breaking down some of the commonly misunderstood complexities of cognitive dysfunction in MS, Feinstein does a beautiful job explaining how subtle deficits isolated to cognitive functions such as processing speed can be incredibly disabling yet invisible to a casual observer or mistaken for ordinary stress. I wish this could become common knowledge."

- Brandon Beaber, MD, Kaiser Permanente, author of Resilience in the Face of Multiple Sclerosis

"Introducing readers to the seriousness and the challenges associated with multiple sclerosis, this book combines a review of the scientific literature with detailed vignettes to provide a comprehensive perspective on where we are as a field in terms of assessing and treating individuals with MS and comorbid conditions. Feinstein cogently communicates the current evidence and tools for improving diagnosis while explaining how the biopsychosocial model of the etiology of MS can inform treatment. I would recommend this book to healthcare professionals in integrated healthcare or those in training who are seeking out a career working in integrated care or clinical psychology."

- Colin M. Bosma, University of Maine

"World-renowned neuropsychiatrist Dr. Feinstein has written a comprehensive book covering cognitive dysfunction, depression, anxiety disorders, affect dysregulation, and personality changes. Researchers will appreciate the scholarly, state of the art summaries of what is known about these important spheres of MS phenomenology. Clinicians will appreciate the rich interplay of case studies, clinical insight, and treatment recommendations. Highly recommended."

- Ralph Benedict, University at Buffalo

"Mind, Mood, and Memory is the book the multiple sclerosis community has been waiting for. Professionals will learn a great deal about the disease, and patients and their loved ones will find the tales of MS meaningful and sensitively told. It is a truth-telling work that gives voice to people from all walks of life. It contains just the right blend of science, clinical experiences, case studies, and personal information. The CMSC endorses this book as a seminal work that will act as a resource and reference to patients and professionals alike now and for years to come."

- June Halper, MSN, CEO, The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers

Reviews
